#1 Dave Hax demonstrates how to cut a spare emergency key.
For this project, only need a few common household items are needed, and you probably have them in your home right now:
- Clear tape
- Lighter
- The lid of a tin can
- Sharp scissors
- Work gloves
- And, of course, the key you want to duplicate.
#2 First step: hold the teeth of the key over a flame.
Keep the key over the flame until it darkens, and then set it aside to cool. You may want to wear work gloves for this step.
#3 Second step:
Take an impression of the teeth with clear tape.
#4 Third step: Stick the tape on top of the lid of a tin can.
Make sure all the teeth of the key lie within the flat part of the lid.
#5 Last step: Cut out the key.
This step must be executed with care in order for the key to work. And make sure to wear those work gloves if you are worried about cutting yourself.
The emergency key will not be quite as strong as your regular house key, so take care not to bend it in the lock when you use it.
